Dear Elliott

I got lost last week and it took a really long time for my mom to find me.  Some guy picked me up and tried to find out who my mom was, but couldn’t figure it out.  I seem to remember awhile back my mom taking me to the doctor to have something implanted to help them find me if I were to ever get lost.  Why didn’t it work??

Sincerely,

Lost but not found

Lost,

What you are referring to is called a microchip.   If you get lost and are taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian, they will scan the microchip to read its unique dog or cat ID code. This is the number used by the chip company to identify you and retrieve your mom or dad’s contact information, which is used to contact them and reunite you.  Unfortunately the process does not work unless your mom or dad registers the chip with their personal information.  It is not a GPS device where we can locate you automatically; the chip must be scanned and matched with your parent’s information.  If you ever move or change phone numbers, your parents must update that information to your chip number.  This can be done online or by calling 888-466-3242.

Sincerely,

Elliott
